Sanctions
- My dissertation on economic sanctions:
- asked why political rivalry makes sanctions long
- I have looked whether sanctions:
- destablize leaders,
- cause elite defections in autocracies
How the outside world changes democracy
- I have looked at:
- whether foreign pressure reverses coups,
- what intervenining in other countries’ elections does
New data
- I have spearheaded data collections on:
- all elections around the world (NELDA),
- how states intervene in elections
I come from Bulgaria
- So I want to know:
- what causes corruption (Bulgaria: number 1 in EU!),
- can social media help advocates for causes organize?
Authoritarians
- Authoritarian regimes harbor many puzzles. I ask:
- why they spread conspiracy theories,
- why they stage show trials or deploy blackouts to deal with scandals
